A Calgary discovery route

River walks, wetlands and lake access

Altadore · Lake Bonavista · Mahogany

A river park, wetlands pathways and a community lake offer different kinds of outdoor access. Explore three Calgary areas while separating places anyone can visit from privileges that depend on a particular property and membership.

These are separate neighbourhood stops, not one connected walking trail. Choose your own transport and check current facility conditions. The suggested public-facing stops do not include entry into membership-only lake parks.

  1. 01

Altadore: public green space above the Elbow River

Start with the City’s River Park information. The park sits on the ridge above Sandy Beach and includes a designated off-leash area. Plan your visit using the City’s current information, then explore how nearby streets would fit your daily routine. The local My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe offers a separate neighbourhood stop if that appeals to you.

Consider: Would river green space be part of your everyday routine or an occasional destination?

  2. 02

Lake Bonavista: separate a public visit from lake privileges

Use Bonavista Promenade’s own directory to choose a shopping or dining stop, and the City’s Frank McCool Athletic Park page to check recreation information and bookings. The private lake park is a different facility. Lake Bonavista’s association explains membership eligibility; verify the specific property’s qualification before relying on lake access in a purchase decision.

Consider: Does the actual property qualify for lake membership, and what access and obligations come with it?

  3. 03

Mahogany: wetlands first, lake requirements separately

Explore the HOA’s information on the City-owned wetlands pathways and the developer’s Urban Village shopping guide. Those are useful starting points for a public-facing neighbourhood visit. The lake and Beach Club have separate membership documentation and access requirements. Review those rules directly with the HOA when considering a home.

Consider: Are the public pathways enough for your routine, or are specific lake privileges essential to your decision?

Compare the routine, then the home

Public paths and a lake address are different benefits. Compare the places you can use day to day, then verify the rights and obligations attached to a specific home. The association’s current documentation should guide lake-access decisions.

  • Confirm which paths and facilities are public and which require membership.
  • Verify eligibility and any fees or obligations for the actual property.
  • Check facility conditions and access rules before a visit.
  • Compare the route from the home and confirm school designation separately.
